Coatings
Rapid advancement of solutions has been achieved by the study of liquid coating materials and process mechanisms. Information was applied into the powder coating development and manufacturing process. The study of mechanisms reduced the time required to develop complex products. A few examples of mechanisms are listed below:

- Corrosion control was achieved through the study of a coating’s barrier function. The barrier function is a coating’s effective isolation of the metallic substrate by limiting the permeation of oxygen and water suppressing the anodic dissolution of the metal or the cathodic reaction.

- Chemical resistance was attained by enhancing the crosslink density of the coating and controlling the insolubility of the cured polymeric backbone toward the respective chemicals. The level of miscibility was limited by the structure of polymeric backbone and the amount of segmental motion. The miscibility of one another material within another was predicted by using the concept of solubility parameter (δ). The solubility parameter is the square root of the cohesive-energy density. The greatest difference in solubility parameter between the coating and test chemical yielded the respective chemical resistance.

- Controlling the solubility parameter, flow and reactivity created multi-color specialty finishes. Different appearances were attained when one color is partially miscible with a second color however immiscible in a third color. As the powder coating melts and flows, the colors combine yielding a unique multiple colored appearance.

- The development of coatings that exhibit wear resistant performance occurs through the understanding of the conditions that produce the wear. Three different mechanisms: adhesive transfer; abrasive cutting; and polymer system fatigue cause wear of polymeric systems.

This short list of mechanisms was a small fraction of chemical philosophy used to construct greater that twenty thousand formula database.
